The most infamous example is one in Portland, where shoppers have been lining up out the door since December to purchase psychedelic shrooms from a store called Shroom House. While the store lists itself as a “herbal shop” online, the people waiting for it say they knew from the beginning it was a place to buy mushrooms.

Other shops are taking a more subtle approach. Fun Guyz in Toronto is one of a few stores to open up in a city where magic mushrooms are still illegal, but it advertises itself as a “smart shop” that sells items adjacent to drug use—like chaga and lion’s mane supplements—as well as a menu of microdose capsules and gummies.
While police in the cities where these stores have opened up say they’re aware of their operations, they don’t consider them a priority for enforcement. “The reality is, we have to deal with gangs and organized crime in this town,” says a constable with the Vancouver Police Department. “We don’t have the resources to go around going after every little psilocybin store that opens up.”
